AirPods 4 Charging Case Issues: Official Support and Quick Fixes
Apple’s AirPods 4 offer incredible audio performance, but a frustrating issue for many users involves the charging case suddenly refusing to charge the earbuds or hold a battery charge itself. Before you rush to the service center to buy a replacement case, try these technical fixes.
1. Clean the Contact Points
The most common cause of charging failure is microscopic dirt or pocket lint blocking the metal contact pins deep inside the case. Take a dry cotton swab (Q-tip) and gently clean the bottom of the slots where the stems of the AirPods sit. Never use liquid cleaners.
2. The Hard Reset Protocol
Often, the case's internal firmware freezes. To reset it: place both AirPods in the case, keep the lid open, and press and hold the setup button on the back for about 15 seconds. Wait until the status light flashes amber, then white. This completely reboots the charging logic board.
3. Checking the Power Source
Ensure you are using an MFi-certified USB-C cable. Sometimes, high-wattage laptop chargers fail to trigger the low-voltage charging protocol required by the AirPods case. Test the case using a standard 5W or 20W charging brick.
